Vassilis Karkatzounis

Legal Policy Advisor @ the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance

Vassilis Karkatzounis is an attorney specializing in Data and Information Technology Law and serves as a Legal Policy Advisor at the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance.

His professional focus encompasses the intricate legal, policy, and regulatory issues related to Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, and Internet Governance.

He has played a central role in representing Greece during the negotiations of the EU AI Act and the Council of Europe's Framework Convention on AI and Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law. Currently, he is representing Greece in the AI Committee, assisting the European Commission in refining the legal framework for AI within the EU, as well as participating to the AI Board Sub-group on Regulatory Sandboxes.

He holds a law degree from the Faculty of Law at the University of Athens and an LL.M. from Queen Mary University of London. He is presently concluding his Ph.D. in the field of data protection and the use of AI for profiling in the context of online advertising at the University of the Aegean's Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering.

With significant experience in projects related to IT Law and Legal Technology, he regularly publishes scholarly articles in esteemed scientific journals. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) and a regular member of the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Justice, focusing on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the judicial system.
